It's true what they say, everything is bigger in Texas-- and that goes for Taco Joint's breakfast tacos, which they serve btw all day. Arriving at Taco Joint, you'll be confused. Is it this door that says, "Taco Joint" or the other door that says, "Sao Paolos"? It's the Sao Paolos door.... don't ask me why. I'm not sure either.
How it works: You place your order at the counter after entering through the Sao Paolos door. On your receipt, you'll be issued a number. Make sure to listen, because you'll hear the lady yell your number. Your tacos will be placed in the metal rack.
In addition to the delicious tacos, I've tried the El Cubano Torta. The El Cubano is served on a toasted telera roll, with pulled pork, grilled onions, jalapeños, garlic mayo, and lettuce. In addition, you get sweetly salted plantain chips... YUM.
I don't know how you COULD forget, but load up on the salsas and order a Mexican Coke, because THIS IS WHAT PERFECTS THE MEAL. -

Always make sure to hit this place up when I'm in town. These breakfast tacos are some of the best I've had (and despite being an out-of-towner, I've tried many). The original space for Taco Joint was a bit run down, kind of a hole in the wall kind of place, but it seems they have since spread themselves out to the restaurant next to it - I believe the space is shared, but I haven't quite figured it out yet.
You can tell that the eggs and potatoes in my usual tacos are fresh - they're always nice and warm when they make it to me and taste fresh. The service has always been nice and patient, the tacos can take a bit to come out, but I'd rather wait and have something nice, warm, and fresh! -

A tier taco in the Austin taco meta game. Its got the UT niche cornered. During the semester this place is super busy. Its a staple for UT students.
During the summer its empty and amazing. Everyone in the neighborhood comes by. The tacos are big, nice variety. Good options are senior crocket and street taco, and chicken mole. The lack of a home made corn tortilla option is dissapointing, but they have good flour.
The sauce game is strong. Chipotle, and avocado stand out.
Also, yucca fries and 3 dollar margs are key during happy hour -

Yo, (hundreds of other taco places in Austin), I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Taco Joint has one of the best barbacoa tacos of all time. Of all time! So meaty! So flavorful! So not greasy (unlike every other barbacoa I ever order around here).
Not to mention, they treat their flour tortillas right! These light & fluffy things are heated up on the flat top until they get ever-so-slightly puffed & browned, and then your delicious warm fillings are folded in. Any other taco place who thinks they can just grab a cold tortilla out of the bag & not have me notice and boycott them forever needs to come watch how the taco-genius ladies at Taco Joint do their work.
Let's also talk salsas. Taco Joint has like 7 or 8 versions in the free salsa bar, so go to town and try them all until you find what suits you. Some are too sweet or otherwise odd for my taste, but I love the extra hot habanero one, the avocado lime one (which is basically like getting free guacamole with your meal), and the generic standard red (tomato-based) & green (tomatillo) salsas.
We tend to visit here at breakfast time on weekends, so I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but if you like breakfast tacos & good coffee, and I know that you do, and you find yourself near the north side of the UT campus, Taco Joint is your spot.
BTW, they serve both the breakfast & lunch menu items in the morning, so don't feel like you need to limit yourself to the typical egg, potato, and bacon options. Bring your own coffee cup, and you can save a buck or two with combo deals.
Note that entry is sort of weird - it looks like you're going into Sao Paolo (a Brazilian sister restaurant that closed in 2016), but don't worry, you're at the right place. -

Best tacos in town. No bullsh*t. Better than taco deli. Better than torchys. They for sure get the job done! Highly recommend as hangover food too!
